[It has been already a month, hasn't it? Goku isn't really sure, he remembers that a month is supposed to have around thirty days and though he hasn't been counting he has the impression that such a length of time has passed. At first he hadn't minded it too much, even if he had asked Hakkai to promise to leave a note next time he left before the kid woke up Goku was aware that there were times in which it wasn't possible. And seeing that there was nothing left that belonged to Hakkai in the apartment the kid had assumed it had been one of those times rather than Hakkai merely leaving on his own.

So he had waited. He had kept going to play around the village and helping Ukyo at the okonomiyaki restaurant. He ate at the restaurants before returning to the apartment to wait for Hakkai. And he kept waiting. Eventually the days turned into weeks and he got tired of waiting. He wanted his friend back already, it was lonely without him, the apartment was big and cold and the drawings hanging on the walls didn't make him smile proudly anymore, happy that the older man appreciated his work, instead they made him want to cry and hurt inside. It wasn't the first time that being alone hurt, but the pain this time felt worse. Why wasn't Hakkai coming back? Had he done something bad? Had he got the other man angry? Had he been a burden? An annoyance?

Sitting and crying wouldn't help, so he had grabbed a bag, left a note at Ukyo's restaurant and gone to search for Hakkai. Everyone said they were trapped inside that barrier, they only went outside during those draft-things, so, of course, wherever Hakkai was it had to be somewhere inside, he just had to search for the man. He knew Hakkai's scent so he could track him, he was sure of it. Wherever Hakkai was hiding or trapped, he would find him and bring him back home with him, even if Hakkai was angry with him, it wasn't a reason to hide from everyone else too.

More weeks passed and Goku is finally back at the village. Alone. Hakkai was nowhere to be found. He isn't in Luceti. How had he left? Why? Had he gone back to search for Kenren and Konzen and bring them to Luceti? The two men were taking a really long time to get there after all... But why hadn't he left a note. Why leave without a word? And what if he hadn't found them? What if the army had got them instead and hurt them as Nataku got hurt? Goku has no idea, he can't understand and he is tired, exhausted and hungry.]

[There's a kid walking slowly around the streets, he wobbles and trips at times, but he keeps moving. His appearance is a real mess, he's dirty, full of mud and looking very much as if he had been out and without an umbrella during yesterday's rainfall. He isn't paying much attention to where he's going, or what or who he bumps into, mumbling a soft sorry before he continues his way.

It feels strange inside. It has stopped hurting as the days went by with him unable to find Hakkai, but he doesn't feel well either. It feels as when he's hungry, but he isn't sure how to fill that gap. Sure, he is also hungry now, if the growling stomach is any indication -no, people of Luceti, that's not a lion trotting around the village and roaring, it's just a hungry monkey-, but he knows it's not only that. He feels hungry in the chest too, where it hurt before.

He probably end at Seventh Heaven, he should go with Ukyo but he's worried about seeing her now looking like this. She probably won't like it, maybe she's angry that he left to begin with. So he just sits there, dirty and hungry, waiting for someone to ask him what he wants to eat before he starts munching the table.

Eventually he will open the journal and ask a question he didn't want to ask.]

How long does it take for someone who leaves Luceti to return here? Anyone knows?

It's not exactly the same thing. Yeah, someone figured out when New Feathers are supposed to come in, but how are we supposed to know who they are before they get here?

[Good question.]

But we can know after they are here, right? And if they were here before we can know that too! And then... And then... If a lot of them are people who were here before we can know how long it was since they were here. And... And... Do maths.

[He doesn't remember what was that thing about percentages or whatever that was used to calculate chances, he only read about it once and didn't get much from it.]

Math? [ She's never read anything about percentages :|a ] It's more about luck and whoever the Malnosso feel like dealing with, isn't it?

I don't know... Everyone always says they didn't want to come here but I did, my friends and me were trying to get to another world so they must be trying to get here with me.

[So it's not that much about luck and the Malnosso... Or is it?]

...why would you wanna end up in a different world?

Because the one you were in before was bad.

[Obviously.]

One bad world doesn't mean there's another one out there.

[ Ehh. ] Not that this place is the kinda place for saying something like that.

But there is! We were in Heavens and we wanted to go to the world below but Luceti is good too, we just wanted out of Heavens and out of their reach. I think Luceti is better, I've been able to meet Nataku again and play with him he had been so much hurt when I last saw him I thought we would never be able to meet and play again even in the world below.

[So Luceti definitively is better.]

[ Pauuuuuse. Someone always has some kind of different opinion; she'd usually opt for getting angry and snapping at them about it. Maybe storming off because she's kind of a brat.

Buuuut he's a kid. From a bad world. Smellerbee has her soft spots. ] Yeah, I guess that much is okay.

I've got a friend like that, too.

[Ironically Goku's opinion isn't so much an opinion, he just wants to go to another world because Konzen said so, if he and the others were sure that it was for the better then so is Goku. Give it some years and the kid would be more of the opinion of "if it's bad make it good with your own hands"... He kind of is already but, yeah, the adults who are stronger and smarter than him said it was better to run so he ran.]

Your friend got hurt a lot too? I don't understand why they have to get hurt like that.

[ Kind of flatly: ] Don't know if anybody understands stuff like that. People just get hurt.

[So it's normal to not understand it? That's a bit of a relief.]

I prefer it when they don't. Have you been able to see your friend again?

Yeah, he's been here with me for a while. I got here first, though, so I could explain more to him when he did. [ Take comfort in what makes you feel important and all that. ]

I was here too already when Nataku came, but I didn't have to explain much, Nataku is smart and someone else already did. I'm glad, there's a lot of things here that I can't explain.

We're lucky we know those kinds of things can happen at all.

Huh? We're lucky for that? Why?

Because at least this way, we know to expect something to happen. Nobody likes getting caught off-guard.

Ah, that's right!

[Pause.]

But I like surprises too! Surprises are lots of fun!

[You can't have surprises if you aren't caught off-guard, right?]

That depends on the surprise. It's nice to see friends again, but I'd still rather know when I'm supposed to be kidnapped.

You didn't want to come here either? There's a lot of people like that.

[Makes him feel a bit strange because he seems to be the only one who wanted to get there... Or anywhere else.]

I like being able to pick for myself. Leave a place behind if I feel like it. Luceti's big, but it's being stuck.

With wings.

Aah... I wonder if it's the same for the others.

I like the wings, though. Even if we can't fly with them, mine are golden in color! What color are yours?

[Funny how he can go on talking without having asked for a name yet or anything, eh?]

[ Eh, it's a nice change of pace. Kids very rarely have ulterior motives. ] Just brown.

Be pretty nice to fly with 'em sometime.

[Goku is too simple minded at any age to have such a thing anyway.]

I would like to fly with them, at least once. I was able to fly when I was a meatbun, it was tons of fun!
